The daimyo were the powerful feudal lords, the owners of private armies. In different periods of Japanese history the daimyo were completely independent rulers or vassals under the rule of the Shogun. The daimyo commanded an army that consisted of loyal elite units of samurai and numerous foot soldiers ashigaru. The miniature depicts a daimyo that is watching the battle, sitting on a stool. In his hand he has a Japanese war fan with a help of which the daimyo gives orders to the samurai and specifies the direction of military redeployment.
